champion_panel_8For the memorial service, the heroes wore their costumes, as was traditional, making for a strange dichotomy of brightly-colored sadness. They each added a black armband, which they would wear for a full month to honor the recently-deceased. A Baptist minister conducted the service. Sally hadn’t even known Orb was religious at all, but she’d always been so wrapped up in herself during school that she barely got to know anyone very closely.

Friends and family gathered in the Just Cause Memorial Garden at one end of the island. It had been established after the original Memorial had been destroyed along with the World Trade Center in 2001. The garden was full of bright flowers and granite statues of fallen heroes. So many of them, with names that had become legendary over the decades: Strongman and Tornado; Extinguisher and the Steel Soldier; Lady Athena and Lionheart. More than Sally could count on all her fingers and toes. It was the hero’s privilege to die so that others could live, and many of them had already made that ultimate sacrifice. In time, when the sculptor completed it, one of Orb would adorn a spot there as well.

Sally knew someday the garden would hold a statue of her there as well. She hoped she could honor the world the way the other heroes had. Orb’s death might have seemed meaningless, dying alone in his lab instead of in the field, saving innocent lives or battling terrible villains, but Sally knew better. Nobody worked so frantically as a scientist desperate to find an answer. Whatever had driven Orb to his death, he’d been doing so to serve and protect the world somehow.

They just had to figure out what that reason was.
