Stefan hung up the phone. He looked both excited and terrified. “There’s an, um, oil tanker. They had an accident on board. A fire or something. The pilot and captain are injured or dead or something. They’ve got no navigation and can’t shut the engines down because of the accident.” His face went pale underneath his carefully-maintained tan. “It’s steaming in toward the New Jersey coastline at full throttle. It’s fully-loaded, too. If it hits, we’re talking the worst catastrophe ever.”
“Holy shit,” said Dannan.
The Young Guns stood around, looking at each other, dumbfounded.
“Oh my God,” said Sally in exasperation. “What are you doing? Let’s go already!”
“What can we do?” Toxy shrugged. “How are we going to stop a tanker with our stupid little powers?”
In the blink of an eye, Sally was right in her face. “We’ll figure it out when we get there.”
“Agreed,” said Champion. He glowed like a searchlight and nearby dancers recoiled with shrieks.
Sally zipped over to the deejay’s booth, located the master volume control, and shut it down before the woman in the booth had a chance to move. “Microphone. Now.”
The woman handed her a wireless mic. Sally cleared her throat and considered what would be the best way to make the announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen, the Young Guns have to go be real superheroes for awhile. Wish them luck. They’ll be back soon.”
